The Practicality of Transitioning to 100% Renewable Energy

Is renewable energy feasible for the city of Moorhead?

Similar in population size, Burlington, Vermont has transitioned to 100% renewable energy use. Powered by an amalgamation of small renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydro, and wood burning facilities, Burlington’s use of oil powered generators accounts for less than 1% of their total energy sourcing, used only in emergency situations. By instituting policy change at the local level, Burlington effectively reduced fossil-fueled energy supplied by large fossil fuel corporations. Now the city produces energy locally and sustainably.

To pursue more renewable energy opportunities in the Fargo-Moorhead area, it would require that we terminate our contract with Missouri River Energy Services. This long-term contract restricts the amount of locally sourced renewable energy that can be produced. If this contract is terminated, it will open up opportunities to buy solar and wind energy from smaller producers in the area. This move to renewable energy will benefit the local economy, the health of our citizens, and the well-being of our earth.

Though Moorhead is at a standstill due to its contract with Missouri River, its use of hydro energy and small inputs from the community solar and wind gardens are positive indicators for a clean-energy future.
