Learn how Moorhead is powering the city and who we partner with to improve our renewable energy use.

Moorhead is well on its way to becoming.an environmentally-friendly city. With over 50% hydropower, this is significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the area.
Still, looking at the solar and wind percentages, it is clear that there is room for improvement. The combination of solar and wind energy complement each other well in this region. Moorhead, due to its flat landscape, is windy by nature. The expansion of wind energy would be a consistent, year-long source of energy. Solar would be more beneficial in the summer months. When the sun begins to set around 5:00 P.M. in the winter, windmills will provide the energy solar panels are unable to produce.
Locally sourcing wind and solar energy would also reduce the percentage of market purchased non-renewable energy while positively impacting the local economy.

In addition to residential consultations, Lightspring promotes investment in community solar farms. The hope is to benefit both community members as well as farmers. For more information, please visit their website.

Moorhead Public Service
As the City’s energy provider, Moorhead Public Service ensures that your lights turn on during the dark winter months. Headed by Dennis Eisenbraun, MPS has begun to spearhead renewable energy projects in town. As an influential force for renewable energy promotion in Moorhead, the Public Service has the most potential to initiate change. Through a contract with Missouri River Energy Service, Moorhead's energy supply is over 50% hydroelectric, with the remaining portion coming from non-renewable sources, and less than 1% from wind and solar.
