Moorhead's Journey to Renewable Energy & Options For the Community

What has Moorhead done thus far? What is available for the community?

Moorhead began its renewable energy journey in 1999 with the installation of one wind turbine producing 750kw, followed by a second installation in 2001. The photovoltaic solar panels on site were installed in 2011 to observe the viability of solar and wind combined.

Clay County is also making significant strides with the development of corporate solar farms. By working to merge the solar and wind energy ordinances into one cohesive ordinance, it will promote the use of land for large scale renewable energy usage. This is a project that was discussed during a public hearing on November 13th, 2018 with plans to continue moving forward into the upcoming year.

The vast majority of emissions in the Moorhead area are attributed to vehicles. To combat this, Moorhead Public Service has partnered with ZEF energy to install an electric car changing station near the intersection of Highway 75 and I-94. This will benefit electric vehicle owners passing through Moorhead, as well as promote the transition to electric cars for Moorhead’s residents.

Citizens have the unique opportunity to transition to renewable energy on an individual level by purchasing a solar panel through Moorhead Public Service, costing roughly $300. This allows residents who cannot install panels on their homes to take advantage of the sun's energy. For further information on the application process, please contact Moorhead Public Services.

The progress made by the city of Moorhead is promising. By promoting the growth if these projects, Moorhead has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Burlington, Vermont, a city of similar size that has reached 100% renewable energy sourcing.
